FEATURE

University students enrolled in the spring NSIN Capstone course delivered early-stage prototypes solving technical and policy-centered problems for the DoD. At the end of the school year, many Capstone students demonstrated their solutions in real-world scenarios to military commands. Learn more about the Capstone students, the national-security problems they solved, and their demonstrations of prototypes to DoD mission partners.

THIS WEEK

JUNE 15, 2022 (In-person)

Educators interested in teaching students to work with the DoD to address the nation’s emerging security challenges can register now for the Hacking for Defense (H4D) Virtual Educators Course. The four-module course provides an overview of H4D and how to develop a successful program at your university.

JUNE 16, 2022 (Virtual)

NSIN is pleased to announce Luke Schleusener, co-founder of Out in National Security, as our guest speaker this month. NSIN program alumni and mission partners are invited to join us for the conversation.

JUNE 19, 2022 (Virtual)

Applications are now open for NSIN alumni to continue to develop solutions into dual-use ventures for clients inside and outside the DoD and compete for $25,000 by participating in the NSIN Vector program. Vector is open to NSIN alums from Hacking for Defense (H4D), Hacks, X-Force, Foundry (formerly Defense Innovation Accelerator), and
Maker programs.

JUNE 20, 2022

Innovate research and engineering technologies for the Combat Feeding Division (CFD) of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) in the NSIN Starts Combat-feeding Pitch Competition. Two winning teams will each receive $100,000 to continue developing their technology with DEVCOM. Applications are due June 20.

NSIN EVENTS

AUGUST 11, 2022 (Hybrid)

Midwest ventures, entrepreneurs, and investors interested in doing business with the DoD can learn more about funding opportunities and meet with companies already expanding into defense markets at NSIN’s Defense Entrepreneurial Symposium.

NSIN ALUM IN THE NEWS

ZeroEyes, an NSIN Hacks and Boost alum innovating an artificial intelligence-based gun detection video analytics platform, received a Direct-to-Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from AFWERX to further develop its technology for deterring active shooters. ZeroEyes also expanded its partnerships with schools to detect guns before school shootings.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Apply for five open Other Transaction (OT) agreements with Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). Learn more below about the technologies desired for each OT agreement:

Technologies capable of integrating multiple tactical/non-tactical radios via wireless and hardwired linkages to solve internal crew communication challenges during operations. Submissions are due June 14.

Software capable of providing machine learning operations tools to support deploying, monitoring, and updating existing DoD algorithms, such as computer vision algorithms for object detection. Submissions are due June 15.
Software capable of optimizing logistics, schedules, and resource-allocation decisions in support of military air transport. Submissions are due June 17.

Software and/or hardware capable of optimizing power management and remote monitoring while improving energy storage at remote installations. Submissions are due June 21.

A carbon-neutral synthetic aviation fuel capable of leveraging non-biomass feedstock that can be produced on-site at bases as well as remote operating locations. Submissions are due June 21.

Applications are now open for five Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract opportunities with the Army, including:

Tech: solve one or more of the following autonomous mobility sensing challenges: off-road sensing, adverse-weather sensing, long-range sensing, and reduction-in-processing-burden sensing.

Problem-solving for the Army: improve autonomous ground mobility to classify vegetation, to maneuver holes, and to operate in situations such as different lighting conditions, fog/rain/dust/snow. In addition, improve autonomous tech to quickly process images with better long-range resolution.

Awards: up to $1.7 million.

Deadline: apply by June 14.

Tech: develop bio-based materials that can feasibly produce equipment such as seat belts, seat materials, and camouflage covers, while innovating less-visible camo materials.

Problem-solving for the Army: bio-based material integration, reduced cost, and less reliance on foreign supply chains to improve the safety and the durability of sustainable Army materials.

Awards: up to $250,000.

Deadline: apply by June 14.
Tech: power management technology for hybrid- and electric-propulsion aircraft resulting in significant fuel savings.

Problem-solving for the Army: efficient and lightweight aircraft that reduces fuel burn while providing increased electrical power capabilities.

Awards: up to $250,000.

Deadline: apply by June 28.

Tech: design, develop, and evaluate domestic hardwood replacement prototypes.

Problem-solving for the Army: cost savings on vehicle replacements and damage, and vehicle readiness will increase by avoiding future potential non-mission-capable dead-line situations.

Awards: up to $250,000.

Deadline: apply by June 28.

Tech: a visual system paired with artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) that can be inserted into energetic manufacturing without adding significant delay to operations.

Problem-solving for the Army: utilize AI/ML in conjunction with an in-line process control system to identify defects in energetic fills of munitions including, but not limited to cracks, voids, gaps, foreign material, and chemical agent leakage.

Awards: up to $250,000.

Deadline: apply by June 28.

Department of the Air Force (DAF) Phase II SBIR/STTR companies can receive up to $15 million in the Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) program and up to $1.8 million in the Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) program to prototype their technology with DAF. Applications are due June 30.

Innovators with technologies capable of strengthening supply-chain software and increasing supply-chain transparency can receive between $200,000 and $1.7 million over five phases of Other Transaction Agreements (OTAs) for their solutions from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Submissions are due Oct. 3. To learn more about the opportunity, attend the virtual industry day on July 14
