Private-sector tech industry volunteers offer their expertise to DoD in a flexible service program.

Experienced and early-career technologists will deliver innovative technological solutions for national security problems to the Department of Defense (DoD) as volunteers in the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) Tech Squad over the next three months.

NSIN Tech Squad matches professionals from the private sector who specialize in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills, with remote, part-time volunteer opportunities to tackle unclassified, digital- and software-oriented problems from DoD mission partners.

Volunteers bridge gaps between tech innovation and communities in Tech Squad by partnering together to solve real-world problems for the DoD at convenient and flexible times to participants’ schedules. For example, military problem sponsors in Tech Squad receive additional support from private-sector talent with relevant STEM experience and fresh perspectives to develop solutions to their problems. Volunteers in Tech Squad receive exposure to unique, mission-critical opportunities and add to their portfolios by solving real national security problems and serving their country.

The 2022 Tech Squad features 38 volunteers out of over 70 applicants who bring diverse work experiences from Big Tech, consulting, and top-tier research universities. Over the next three months, the Tech Squad will meet with their mission partners to solve 20 DoD problems, such as: developing machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for 3D-printed parts and modeling biometric data; creating code to evaluate and scale fuel supply chains, and aircraft repair operations; and designing applications to identify and detect cybersecurity threats and geospatial activity. The Tech Squad will showcase its solutions and products for the DoD over three demo days held June 28-30.
